The world-famous electronic music festival and conference Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) will be celebrated in full force again in 2024!

ADE starts on October 16th and runs until October 20nd. Book your taxi to or from the events at Staxi. Why? Because you’ll always get a fixed price for your taxi when you pre-book with us.

You’ll arrive at the event all relaxed and most importantly, you’ll get home safely when you travel to and from ADE by taxi.

Of course, being picked up at home or your hotel isn’t a big challenge. But finding your pre-booked taxi after a big party like Awakenings or DGTL can be a bit of a hassle. We’ve listed a few tips to locate your assigned taxi below:

1. Book your ADE taxi well in advance

During big events such as ADE, it’s enormously busy at our taxi dispatch center. So busy, in fact, that we sometimes have to turn customers away. Therefore, our first tip is: book your taxi well in advance!

As soon as there are more reservations than drivers available, we have to increase the minimum reservation time. Normally in Amsterdam, you can book a Staxi up to 15 minutes in advance. If the demand for taxis becomes extraordinarily high, we’ll have to increase the minimum booking time. When that happens, you can still book a taxi, but it’ll be for maybe half an hour or an hour upfront.

It can also happen that it’s so busy that we increase our fixed rates by a percentage. We do this when the supply of available taxis is surpassed by demand. For instance, when big events end, everyone wants to leave simultaneously. Often, this results in disorganised chaos.

2. Don’t miss out on your fixed price

Our fixed prices give certainty about the costs for your taxi ride. The further away you travel with us, the higher the discount!

An additional benefit of a set price is that the amount on the taximeter does not increase during your trip. Grinding your teeth while watching the price rise faster than the speed of light, well, that’s a thing of the past.

The only thing you need to do is make sure you board the taxi that is assigned to you. Of course, we’ll give you a hand:

3. Book your ADE taxi online

If you book your taxi online, you will receive confirmation by SMS. Twenty minutes before the requested pick-up time, you will receive a text message informing you that the taxi is on its way to you. You will see the name of your driver, the make and model of the vehicle he drives and the license plate number. You can call the driver directly from the attached track & trace link.

4. Wait for your taxi

At the end of the larger ADE parties, such as Awakenings in the Gashouder, Into the Woods at NDSM or Tomorrowland in the ZiggoDome, there are often hundreds of taxis in the area. It may be a bit of a challenge to find the taxi that has been assigned to you.

Your driver will always be able to show that he’s been reserved for you. Usually, the job is visible on the taxi driver’s onboard computer. Some drivers receive their jobs on an app. In any case, you should recognise the destination address immediately. That’s the address you stated when you made the reservation.

This driver – your driver – will bring you home for the agreed price. If you get into the wrong taxi, the meter will start to run, and you don’t know what you’ll eventually have to pay.

5. Make sure we can reach you on your phone

We can’t help you if we can’t reach you. The driver will always try to call you; the dispatch center mainly works with WhatsApp. When you make a reservation, it’s useful to give us an extra phone number from a friend who’s also joining the party. Another idea could be to take a power bank with you so you can recharge your phone at the end of the party.

When you still have enough battery power, you can share your live location with your driver through WhatsApp. If he also shares his location with you, you’ll see your flags on the map moving towards each other until you have found each other.

6. If you take a random taxi

If you decide to randomly step into one of the many taxis on the street, we also have a few tips for you:

  • Calculate online how much the taxi will cost;
  • Turn on your navigation so that you can check that the driver is not detouring;
  • If necessary, try to agree on a price with the driver before the start of the trip;
  • Always ask for a receipt at the end of the ride.

Suppose you’re going out with a friend. You don’t live together or even in the same street, but you do want to take a taxi together. You’re in for a Dutch treat!

We’ve got the solution for you: Book a Staxi with an extra stop and split the bill with your friend!

Book a taxi with an extra stop

  1. Navigate to the fare calculator by clicking on the ‘book now’ button;
  2. Enter the date and time of pick-up and indicate how many people are travelling in total;
  3. Enter the pick-up address and click on the plus sign to add extra stops;
  4. Finally, enter your final destination and choose the desired vehicle type.
  5. Enter your contact details and book your taxi with a stop!

Fixed price for a taxi with a stopover

Of course, for an extra stop on the way, you’ll get a fixed price as well. The taxi fare calculator determines the fare based on the length of the entire route. There are no hidden costs so that you can be sure of the best price for your taxi with a stopover.

It doesn’t matter how many stops you want to make along the way; the overview shows you the calculated route. And: the longer the journey, the cheaper it is per kilometer!

Curious about the cost of a taxi with a stopover? Calculate the price within a few minutes and book your taxi with Staxi!

Imagine you’re at a taxi stand, say at Schiphol Airport, and it’s positively bustling with taxis. Or maybe after a festival, imagine the endless row of cabs.

Now, how do you recognise your reserved Staxi? How do you make sure you board the right taxi and don’t miss out on your fixed price? Staxi will help you with this, and after reading this article, you will be able to find the taxi you have reserved without a hitch!

In terms of the costs, it makes a significant difference whether or not you get into the right taxi. Our rates are sometimes more than half the metered fare! Curious where that big difference comes from? Then read on!

Taxi-hailing market: the driver turns on the meter

Taxis that you hail on the street or find at a taxi stand (together: the taxi-hailing market) always drive on the taximeter. A metered fare is based on a starting rate, a distance rate and a rate per minute. If the driver has to make a sudden detour or if you are in a traffic jam, the meter keeps ticking, and the price can rise quickly.

How to recognise your taxi - hailing a taxi

Taxi booking market: book a taxi in advance

When you pre-book at Staxi, you’ll travel for a fixed, pre-arranged price. Our dispatcher will assign a specific driver to come and pick you up. And only with this taxi will you pay the fixed rate you booked for.

Our rates are a lot cheaper than metered prices. If you don’t board with the assigned driver, the non-assigned driver will turn his taximeter on. And that can make a big difference in the cost of your taxi. So: how to recognise your Staxi?

How to recognise your taxi

Drivers who want to work on the taxi-hailing market in Amsterdam must be affiliated with a TTO (Permitted Taxi Organisation). These taxis have a taxi roof light with three red St Andrew’s crosses (the famous Amsterdam XXX). That’s in contrast to non-official taxis, which usually have a small roof light, always without the three red crosses.

Staxi is a TTO as well. In fact, we were the first! Our roof lights

have a striking light blue colour, but our Staxi Ladies have a pink one. Each roof light has a roof light number. Ours always consists of three digits.

hoe herken je een Staxi Taxi - Staxi Lady Daklichten

Recognise your driver

We also have drivers that only do pre-booked rides. You’ll not find them on the taxi stands, and they don’t have a Staxi roof light. How do you know if this taxi is the right one?

It’s not that difficult. When you book a Staxi, we’ll forward the request to the driver. He or she knows your exact destination and can prove this. If you have any doubts, you can ask your driver if he has indeed been assigned to you. He can show this in his driver app or the onboard computer of his taxi.

What you can also do is, when your driver contacts you, ask if he can share his live location via WhatsApp. When you do, you’ll see the driver move towards you until you’re in the taxi!

Find your taxi effortlessly with the Staxi App

With the Staxi App, it’s easy to see where your taxi is and which vehicle we’ve assigned to you. You can follow your taxi on a live map, you have information about the vehicle’s registration number, and you can call the driver directly. Use the Staxi App to identify your taxi with your eyes closed.

General features of a Staxi taxi:

✅  Blue number plates, like every Dutch taxi;
✅  Light blue or pink roof light with the three red St Andrew’s crosses, white letters ‘Staxi’ and the roof light number in black;
✅  The driver can prove that he’s been assigned to you;
✅  Of course always a clean, representative vehicle and a friendly driver.

Recognising your taxi is child’s play with the Staxi App!

Staxi: always a taxi for a fixed rate

Book your taxi ride in advance, and Staxi will always give you a fixed rate in advance. You can easily book in one of the following ways:

  • With our online taxi fare calculator;
  • Via the Staxi App;
  • Send us a message via WhatsApp;
  • By phone.

We are very proud that the city of Amsterdam has selected us as the new transporter for Mokumflex! From the 1st of July onwards, you can book a flex taxi with us. Find out what Mokumflex is below. To lift a tip of the veil: a Mokumflex ride will cost you just € 2.50 per person!

Mokumflex: demand-responsive public transport

In 2018, the municipality of Amsterdam started the Mokumflex project as a pilot. In the sparsely populated areas of Landelijk Noord and Driemond, travellers could book a free taxi to or from a bus stop or station nearby. While Mokumflex was operational, there was no need for a scheduled bus service, but residents could still rely on transportation to and from public transport hubs.

The pilot was successful, so the project was extended. From the 26th of August 2019 onwards, ‘flexers’ paid a personal contribution of € 2.50 per person.

Staxi: the new Mokumflex transporter

The contract with the original transporter expired on the 30th of June 2020. Several parties signed up to become the new Mokumflex transporter. And, you guessed it, we came out as the winner!

We are immensely proud to add this mobility solution to our list of services! For a fixed price per person, you can travel from stop to stop in the Driemond region (the blue route on the map below) or Landelijk Noord (the red route on the map below).

In addition to our regular fixed price taxi service, you can now book a very low-cost Mokumflex taxi ride within the designated areas!

As of today, you can specifically book a Staxi with a female driver. We’re very proud to be the first online taxi platform to bring this service to Amsterdam! That doesn’t mean that our male drivers aren’t any good. There’s simply a demand for female taxi drivers, as is shown by a survey that De Telegraaf (a prominent Dutch newspaper) recently conducted.

A group of more than 1000 women answered questions about how safe they feel in public. 43% of the respondents indicated that they often don’t feel safe when taking a taxi. The fact that most taxi drivers are men was one of the causes.

Our female drivers confirm this sentiment. Passengers, both ladies and gentlemen, are pleasantly surprised when they see that there is a woman at the wheel of the taxi. They’re often asked for a phone number or business card so that they can call the female driver again the next time they want to travel by taxi.

Of course, one woman can never be of service to everyone all the time. That’s why we are now joining our (female) forces! Our new service ‘Staxi Lady’ is a taxi service by women, for everyone who feels safer or more comfortable with a female taxi driver.

You can only book and pay for a taxi ride with a Staxi Lady online. At the moment, the minimum reservation time is two hours. Still, we expect to be able to take this back to about twenty minutes soon.

Use the online taxi fare calculator on the Staxi Lady page to book a taxi ride with a female driver!

Did you know…

  • There are more than 231,000 passenger cars registered in Amsterdam?
  • This amounts to almost 1,400 passenger cars per square kilometre?
  • The number of bicycles in our capital is nearly 900,000?

Parking rates in Amsterdam

Since April 2019, parking in the city centre of Amsterdam has become much more expensive. The price for parking your car downtown is now a mere € 7.50 per hour. The rates in the other parking zones and garages have gone up as well.

One of the municipality’s main reasons for increasing the parking rates is the desire to make the city center a low-traffic area. Another measure to achieve this is the abolition of thousands of parking spaces.

Amsterdam collects 200 million euro (!) in parking fees annually, of which 32 million euro goes to surveillance. Most of the revenue is used to improve the road network and to create playgrounds and green spaces.

Parking police

The parking police, removing stuff that doesn’t belong in the parking meters, back in 1977.

Various parking zones in the city

Amsterdam has several zones, each with its rate.

  • Blue zones: in the blue zones you can park for free, but this is only allowed for a short time. You are obliged to use a parking disc here.
  • 10-cent zones: you can park here for a short time for 10 cents. You may find these zones near shopping streets, cemeteries or care complexes.
  • Regular zones: here the hourly rates vary from € 1.40 in Amsterdam Noord, for example, to € 7.50 in the city centre.

Is free parking possible in Amsterdam?

It’s almost impossible to park for free in Amsterdam. If you look very well, you might accidentally find a street where you don’t have to pay for parking.

Other options, cheaper than parking in the city center, are for example:

  • P+R Transferium;
  • Parking at a metro station outside the beltway;
  • Low-cost parking garage.

A day’s parking in Amsterdam

Imagine: you’ve had an enjoyable drive from The Hague, and you’re driving straight into the chaotic city centre of Amsterdam. On your left side, a loudly ringing tram overtakes you. To the right, some cyclists are throwing themselves in front of your wheels.

That one parking space along the canal you just passed was too cramped. Also, you don’t feel like parallel parking so close to the water. The parking garage you just drove by is full, regrettably.

After half an hour of driving around in circles, you’ve finally found a parking space! There’s a queue at the parking machine. It’s now 13.09 hours, while your important appointment was at 13.00 hours. While walking hastily, you try to register at your parking app. Was this the Korte Marnixstraat, Derde Marnixdwarsstraat or the Marnixkade?

bicycle parking

If you think finding back your car is a challenge, try recovering your bike!

After your appointment, you start the search for your car. Registering to your parking app failed, so, sadly, you got a fine. The BMW driver next to you probably opened its door a bit too enthusiastically when he got out. Your car has a dent now, which wasn’t there two hours ago. And retrospectively, it was the First Marnixplantsoen where you parked. It took some locating your car!

Of course, we welcome you to Amsterdam, but maybe it would be better not to come by car next time!

Staxi offers the solution

Isn’t it preferable to arrive fully relaxed at your big meeting in Amsterdam? In the taxi, you got some work done and handled several phone calls. Now your driver drops you off at the doorstep.

No more stress in traffic, no parking fees and no more searching for your car. A friendly Staxi driver will take you safely and quickly to your destination in a clean taxi. Book your taxi online or via the Staxi App.

Taximeter (noun) taxi·me·ter | \ ˈtak-sē-ˌmē-tər \ an instrument for use in a hired vehicle (such as a taxicab) for automatically showing the fare due

That’s the Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary entry for the word taximeter. Did you ever think the first known use of this word was in 1894? A taximeter is a device that calculates the price for your taxi ride. How does it work and what are laws and regulations for this device?

What is a taximeter?

A taximeter is a calibrated and annually inspected device that calculates the price for your taxi ride. Three elements determine the final meter price:

  • Boarding rate;
  • Mileage rate;
  • Time rate.

The Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management determines the maximum rates for these three components each year.

A taxi company is not obliged to drive at maximum rates. It may, therefore, happen that at company X a kilometer by taxi is more expensive than at company Y. In practice, this is hardly ever the case in Amsterdam.

The history of the taximeter

German-born Friedrich Wilhelm Gustav Bruhn (1853-1927) invented the taximeter in 1891. In 1897, Bruhn’s compatriot Gottlieb Daimler was the first to build a taxi equipped with a taximeter: the Daimler Victoria. Daimler’s company ultimately gave rise to Mercedes-Benz.

The first taxi parameters were mechanical and mounted above the driver’s front wheel. That wasn’t very handy; the customer couldn’t see what rate the meter was charging. Soon the meters were moved inside, in the taxi.

The electronic meter was introduced in the 1980s. The once familiar ticking sound of the meter’s timing mechanism disappeared as a result.

How a taximeter works

Taximeters determine the distance travelled and the elapsed time of your taxi ride. The apparatus uses electric pulses to calculate the distance. A sensor attached to the car’s transmission system sends pulses to the taximeter each time the taxi travels a certain distance.

Example: Our imaginary sensor sends a pulse to the taximeter for every centimeter travelled. However, not every centimeter is added to the fare. Our hypothetical taximeter does not increase the fare until 100 metres have been covered. In this example, you pay for every 100 metres that you have driven in a taxi.

When calibrating the taximeter, the mechanic determines how many speed pulses the distance sensor delivers at a distance of one kilometer. This number is used by the device to carry out the rate calculations.

As soon as the driver starts his meter, it records the time at which it was activated. Once the driver stops the meter, the computer calculates the time in between. The taximeter uses this metric, together with the total amount of speed pulses sent, to calculate the final fare.

A metered fare can turn out to be much higher than expected

The metered fare often turns out higher than you’ve hoped for!

Laws and regulations

The taximeter is mandatory for drivers who operate on the taxi-hailing market. Drivers that do pre-booked rides for which no price agreement has been made in advance need a meter as well.

As of January 1st 2016, a taximeter is no longer mandatory if the driver(s) of the vehicle only arrange trips for which “a fixed rate has been agreed in advance with the consumer in a manner that is recognisable and transparent”. For example, a driver can only use his or her taxi for carrying out subsidised taxi transport.

If a driver is active on the hailing market (i.e. if he drives from taxi stands or takes ‘hands’ on the street), he must have taxi fare cards in the taxi. On these information cards, you can see what the exact rates are that this driver uses.

Staxi: metered fare versus fixed fare

Of course, you can hail a Staxi on the street or take one from a taxi rank. However, if you know in advance that you need a taxi, then it is worth making a reservation with us. In that case, you’ll have nothing to do with metered fares, but you’ll benefit from the fixed prices we offer.

Check in the online fare calculators what the fixed rate is for your Staxi ride and get acquainted with our services.

On the taxi fare card you read “maximum €35,- Amsterdam <> Schiphol”. Once you arrive at your destination, however, the total price is almost twice that. The taxi meter gives a much higher rate. Result: an angry passenger and a frustrated taxi driver.

This dispute is an excellent example of the difference between a taxi that you hail in the streets and a taxi that you book in advance.

In this article, we’ll explain what a hailed taxi is, how it differs from a pre-booked taxi and why it’s useful to know this difference.

Hailed taxi: a randomly boarded taxi

A hailed taxi is a taxi that you flag down on the street or that you board at a taxi rank such as Amsterdam Central Station or Schiphol Airport. Hailing taxi drivers have to comply with tons of rules and regulations.

For example, he (or she) must always take the shortest possible route, is obliged to start the taximeter for each trip, and so on.

You’ll always pay a metered fare if you take a hailed taxi.

The Amsterdam taxi-hailing market

When you embark a random taxi in the streets or taxi ranks, you’re making use of the taxi-hailing market. In Amsterdam, there are strict rules for drivers that operate on the hailing market.

Of course, the national Passenger Transport Act (WP2000) applies to every taxi driver throughout the Netherlands. This Act allows local authorities to impose additional requirements on drivers that want to operate on the hailing market in a local taxi regulation.

Amsterdam was the first city to make use of this opportunity. The most important provision for Amsterdam taxi drivers is that, if they want to work on the hailing market, they must be a member of an Authorized Taxi Organisation (TTO). There are seven TTOs in Amsterdam, the first of which was Staxi.

Other examples of Amsterdam taxi rules are:

  • Taxi drivers are not allowed to hinder traffic at or in the vicinity of a taxi stand.
  • Instructions given by enforcers and traffic controllers must be obeyed immediately, without question.

The local regulation is intended to remove the greatest taxi annoyances.

Pre-booked taxi

When you call a taxi company to book a cab, you are no longer using the taxi-hailing market. Now, you are in the taxi booking market. Your reservation comes in at a dispatch center and is therefore registered. A planning system assigns the taxi ride to an available driver when the time comes, which is also logged.

Pre-booking a taxi is, therefore, less anonymous than getting in a random taxi. Because the system keeps track of everything, pre-booking has its advantages. For example, if you forget your phone in the vehicle. The dispatchers can easily find out who transported you.

Book a taxi from wherever you are in Amsterdam. As long as it is a safe spot!

Hail or pre-book a Staxi

Connected drivers can work in different areas of the Amsterdam taxi market. We’re a TTO for those who want to drive on the hailing market. But we’re also a taxi company where people can pre-book taxis. Staxi is therefore active in both the hailing market and the pre-booking market. But our scope is even broader; we do subsidised taxi transport as well.

The most significant difference between a pre-booked taxi and a pre-booked Staxi is that you’ll always get a fixed price at Staxi. Not just for a taxi to and from Schiphol Airport, but for every taxi you book with us.

For this, it’s essential you board the Staxi that we’ve assigned to you. Since our drivers are active on both the hailing-market as the pre-booked market, confusion may arise.

Download the free Staxi App

You can easily find your assigned Staxi when you book with our app. It allows you to see your Staxi approaching in real-time. You can also use the app to contact your driver directly.

Besides our taxi booking app, we offer other ways to book a Staxi:

  • The taxi fare calculators on this site
  • WhatsApp
  • Of course, you can give us a call as well

Our dispatch center is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And with more than 500 Staxi drivers, there’s always someone available to pick you up and take you safely to your destination.
