Fun facts about Weesp
Did you know that cocoa powder is a Dutch invention? Casparus van Houten invented a new way of processing cocoa beans in 1828. He patented the process and in 1850 he bought the factory ‘De Adelaar’ in the Aetsveld polder. From Weesp, Van Houten cocoa powder went all over the world! Weesp was part of both the Old and New Dutch Waterline and the Defence Line of Amsterdam. The Torenfort at the Ossenmarkt (completed in 1861) is one of the most famous surviving Weesper buildings from this era.
Besides chocolate, Weesp was also known for centuries for its gin distilleries and beer breweries. In 2019, Weesper beer brewer Wispe and gin distiller Anker will open a tasting room in the Sint-Laurentiuskerk. Very appropriate, as St. Laurentius is the patron saint of beer brewers.
